Further course information:
The module has several components:
- the development of the actor and director’s ability to analyse and use subtext in narrative screen fiction, and thereby identify a scene’s ‘obligatory moment’,
- the ability to identify and clearly act appropriate ‘actions’ and ‘beats’,
- the ability to use references to augment a sense of authenticity. For example, ‘as if’, ‘circles of attention’, to sustain being ‘in the moment’, consistent with the needs of the scene and the requirements of the director,
Pre-requisites:
- demonstrate an awareness of the differences between screen and stage acting,
- demonstrate an ability to work in a team
- 3yrs training or equivalent industry experience
Learning outcomes
As there are no endorsed competency standards relevant to this course, the learning outcomes of all modules have been based on consultation with practitioners and industry representatives through a Course Advisory Committee convened by Screenskill and the teacher’s professional level training at NIDA and AFTRS etc.
On completion of this module the learner should be able to demonstrate competence at a professional level to complete the following tasks:
- Analyse a narrative fiction feature film or television script to identify the over-arching objective of the protagonist, antagonist, and one other main character.
- Analyse one dramatic scene from a feature film or television script to identify its scenic structure, obligatory moment, with reference to the protagonist’s action/s, beats and action-change events.
- Provide a constructive critical reading of an actor colleague playing an ‘action’. Identify behaviours that infer clarity of the intended ‘action’ and those that don’t.
- Provide a constructive critical reading of an actor colleague, acting a scene from a film or television script. Identify whether appropriate ‘actions’, ‘beats’, and references are utilised, to support intended outcomes.
For directors:
Film a short scene on video with two characters, which is staged/blocked using three camera set-ups: one group shot and two reverse close ups. Then rough-cut edit suitable for presentation to the workshop for course director feedback.
Other information regarding course content:
For participants the workshops will include awareness and confidence building exercises, solo and group improvisations, short two-hander scene rehearsals, filming and critical feedback from experienced coach/tutor.
These are practice-based workshops for experienced actors and directors, so be ready to jump in. You will be completing constant scene work with expert tuition, reviewing scenes and engaging in group discussion. With expert coaching you’ll notice how quickly you become more effective. How fast? Learn to noticeably improve between takes using a conscious process. Upon completion of these workshops you will also be empowered with tools that enable you to continue to self-improve, alone and with ‘learning buddies’, in your own time.
Course content will be tailored to the individual and their needs. The process of setting, achieving and reviewing individual learning goals is an important part of continuous skill growth and long-term career development. Each learner will be asked to set 2-3 individual learning goals for the weekend via a pre-course questionnaire.

Additional course details
Film and television requires actors and directors who can work technically and intuitively; competently and efficiently; who can speedily create and provide a range of nuances suitable for camera and editing.
Within the workshops both screen actors and directors learn to use screen language and appropriate vocabulary. Also, importantly, to become confident and efficient using subtext to achieve authenticity, and nuance - thereby avoiding the limitations of ‘result’ ie, indicated acting and directing.
